Shaping the Next Generation of Accountants Through Real-World Experience

At JW Hinks, we recognise the important role practical experience plays in helping students develop their skills and confidence as they prepare for their future careers.
Over the last year, Zavira Abdoulvagabou, a BSc Accounting & Finance student at Aston University, has completed her industry placement with us.
Throughout this time, Zavira has gained experience across different departments within the firm, developing new skills and building confidence in applying her academic knowledge in a professional environment.
As she prepares to return to university, we asked Zavira to reflect on her placement, the skills she has developed, and the lessons she will take with her into the next stage of her career.
What motivated you to apply for a work experience placement at JW Hinks?
“A careers talk with Maya Bennett inspired me. She was a guest speaker at Aston University in my first year and spoke about her journey at JW Hinks, the invaluable experience she gained early in her career, and why it’s such a good place to start.
This motivated me to apply for work experience during my summer break between my first and second year of university.”
Which department stood out most during your placement, and why?
“I felt most comfortable working in the accounting services department because many of the tasks and concepts were closely related to what I had studied at university.
This allowed me to quickly understand my responsibilities and apply my academic knowledge in a practical setting with minimal additional training.
I was able to use accounting principles I had learned in areas such as financial reporting, reconciliations and record‑keeping, which helped me perform my duties confidently and efficiently.
The experience reinforced my understanding of accounting concepts and showed me how classroom knowledge can be applied to real‑world business operations.”
What skills or knowledge have you gained that will support your future career?
“During my placement, I had the opportunity to apply the accounting and finance knowledge I had gained through my studies to real client work, particularly through preparing and interpreting financial statements.
I also gained Level 1 and Level 2 Xero certifications, which strengthened my understanding of digital accounting systems.
Alongside this, I built on the Excel Associate qualification I achieved at university by developing my digital skills further, including confidently applying formulas, using data analysis techniques and efficiently organising client records.”
How would you describe the culture at JW Hinks after spending time with the team?
“I would describe the culture as supportive, collaborative and community‑focused.
Team members were approachable and always willing to offer guidance and mentoring, which created a positive learning environment and helped me develop quickly both professionally and personally.
I also appreciated the strong sense of teamwork within the firm, where colleagues worked together and supported one another to achieve common goals.
The firm demonstrates a commitment to giving back to the community through its involvement in charity events and fundraising initiatives. Seeing the team come together to support charitable causes reflected the firm’s values and contributed to a positive and inclusive workplace culture.”
What impact has your placement had on where you would like to build your career in the future?
“JW Hinks is a place I would be happy to work in the future because of its friendly and welcoming working environment. I felt supported by colleagues who were approachable, helpful and genuinely interested in my development.
This created a positive atmosphere where I felt comfortable asking questions and learning from others.
I am also impressed by the firm’s commitment to developing young talent and supporting employees in pursuing professional qualifications such as ACA or ACCA.
The opportunities for training, mentoring and career progression demonstrate that JW Hinks invests in the long‑term success of its staff.”
What advice would you give to another student thinking about applying for a placement?
“I would advise any student considering a placement to approach an internship with an open mind and a willingness to learn something new every day.
Even if you have already studied many of the concepts at university, there is a significant difference between understanding them in theory and seeing how they are applied in a professional environment.
Make the most of every opportunity to ask questions, take on new tasks, and learn from the experienced professionals around you. Being proactive and eager to learn will help you develop both your technical knowledge and workplace skills.
Applying your academic knowledge in practice is one of the most valuable aspects of the placement and embracing that learning process is the best way to gain confidence and make the most of the experience.”
